For a whole summer in Alençon, a group of young people became "crazy" about garden gnomes and set about freeing them in the forest, "their natural habitat". They launched the "Garden Gnome Liberation Front" (FLNJ), which has since been emulated the world over. Even today, groups claiming to be FLNJ are springing up all over the place, liberating gnomes in forests, public squares, lakes...
